Why We Paused Single Photo Evaluation — and Our Plan for November
The road from September 18, when we paused Single Photo Evaluation, to today — and where LENSIC stands now.
On September 18, we decided to pause Single Photo Evaluation, the most popular service on LENSIC, and rebuild it. The season has turned since then.
This post covers what happened in between, where things stand now, and how we plan to come back to you.
First, an apology. When we announced the pause in September, we said we would be back within a few days. Instead, we have kept you waiting far longer than we expected. We are sorry.
Why we paused
The promise LENSIC tries to keep is a simple one: a fair evaluation, made with as close to a professional critic's eye as we can manage, that does not waver from one day to the next.
But a sudden change in the technology at the core of Single Photo Evaluation meant there were moments when we could no longer say that every photograph was being evaluated consistently. The issue began outside our own work, but wherever its cause lies, if unreliable results reach you, that is our responsibility. Rather than keep running a service we were not sure of, we chose to pause and rebuild it properly.
What we have been doing
It has been a longer road than we thought. Our team sorted and analyzed several hundred photographs by hand, and studied AI engineering along the way, approaching everything — from how the model looks at a photograph to the rubric for each genre — as if starting from scratch.
- Criteria in each genre's own language. A landscape is read as a landscape, a street photograph as a street photograph. That has been our standard since LENSIC first launched on January 15, 2026, but this time we laid out the criteria far more carefully, sub-genre by sub-genre. There is also a new Everyday genre.
- Criteria that look past the scene itself. We refined the evaluation model so that a beautiful sunset or a famous subject does not lift a score on its own. What we tried to put at the center is what photographers bring to the frame through their own intention: where they stood, when they pressed the shutter, how they saw the light.
- Same photo, consistent judgment. Even a human critic's judgment can shift with their mood or the day, and we cannot promise 100% either. But to evaluate with criteria that are as consistent and careful as possible, we evaluated several hundred photographs again and again, and improved how reproducible and stable the results are.
With thanks to our beta testers
We are refining the new Single Photo Evaluation together with a small group of testers who have used LENSIC more devotedly than anyone over the past months, each with a fair and exacting eye. We are truly grateful to them. Whether the new scores feel right, whether the detailed critique genuinely helps with the next photograph — we are listening closely to everything they tell us as we make the final refinements.
We have written separately about how to read the new scores in How to Read Your LENSIC Score.
Back in November
Our goal is to reopen Single Photo Evaluation to everyone in November. Once the date is set, we will let you know on the site and by email.
- Your past evaluations stay as they are. Every evaluation you have received is kept, and the new criteria will not change results you already have.
- Scores may come out differently. The criteria have changed, and are probably stricter, so the same photograph may score differently than before. We expect scores to come out a little lower overall, and we ask for your understanding in advance.
- Credit packs get 60 more days. To make up for the time you could not use evaluation, credit packs you held during the pause, and credit packs you buy before Single Photo Evaluation reopens, each get an extra 60 days before they expire.
LENSIC is still here for you
- Project Review. Project Review — which takes 5 to 20 photographs as one series and reads them as a body of work shaped by a single authorial vision — is open as usual.
- Past results and Deeper Analysis. Your earlier evaluation results and Deeper Analysis are there whenever you want to revisit them.
In closing
Thank you for waiting. Because so many of you kept coming back during the pause, through Project Review and by email, and waited with us, we were able to take the time to rebuild this properly instead of rushing it. We will see you again in November, with a steadier evaluation.
